About me: Dr Charlotte Coleman

I am an experienced tutor, specialising in 11+ Entrance Exams, including the ISEB Pretest, for grammar and independent schools. In addition, I am a qualified teacher (with Enhanced DBS), judged as ‘outstanding’, with a First-Class BA Honours degree and a Ph.D. holder. I offer group tutoring in Sevenoaks and Orpington. Contact me via my Facebook page or email: charlotte.jane.coleman@gmail.com.
My tutoring approach has seen excellent results: from 2016 to now, consistently 83-90% of my students have passed the Kent Test. In 2025, 42 students (84%) passed the Kent Test with an average score of 371.2 (across 50 students); 54% achieved super-selective scores of 371 and above. In 2024, 35 students (83%) passed the Kent Test; in 2023, 33 students (85%) passed. Many of whom had qualified for super-selective grammars such as St Olave’s, The Judd School, Tonbridge Girls’ Grammar and Newstead Wood. In addition, many of my previous students have gained entry to leading independent schools such as Sevenoaks, Wycombe Abbey, Caterham, Benenden and Tonbridge. In 2025, 9 students (75%) of my students received offers to Sevenoaks School.
Although I focus on 11+, I have previously tutored for GCSE History and 13+ Common Entrance (English). My specialist areas are essay and creative writing and English comprehension.
Tutoring Options
1. Group tutoring for 11+ Entrance Exams:
I offer group tutoring for Year 4, 5 and 6 students for 11+ entrance exams such as the Kent Test, St Olave’s, Newstead Wood; ISEB Pretest and independent school entrance examinations including Tonbridge School, Radnor House, Sevenoaks, Walthamstow Hall, Radnor House, Woldingham, Caterham, Benenden and Wycombe Abbey. The sessions are carefully planned and structured to ensure the content of the 11+ is covered and I develop exam skills and techniques.
During the half-term, I offer past paper sessions and workshops for Year 5 students. In these sessions, we complete past papers in exam conditions and review the tests to highlight development areas. In addition, August sessions are offered for Year 4 students to give them some experience of a test setting and gauge where they are in the context of the group.
Students enjoy working together, listening to different approaches to questions, applying the concepts they have learnt, and are proud when they have made progress.
2. 11+ and English tutoring for International Students:
I tutor international students for 11+ Entrance Exams to independent schools in Sevenoaks and surrounding areas. The lessons improve: English comprehension; awareness of literature; develop English vocabulary, spelling and grammar; enhance writing skills and punctuation. I also offer general English tutoring to improve reading and writing skills. Tutoring takes place online.
Tutoring Approach:
For both Year 4 and Year 5, I follow a similar approach to tutoring. From September to April, students will learn the core content of the 11+ (age appropriate); we cover English, Maths and Reasoning. It is likely that they will learn new content, not previously covered in schools, as my curriculum is carefully designed to work a little ahead of the English National Curriculum.
After Easter, we focus on completing age appropriate assessments (11+ past papers for Year 5) in timed conditions and workshops. The assessments aim to consolidate learning; give students real exam experience; develop exam technique and strategy. The workshops target specific areas that need consolidation or revision in Reasoning, Maths and English.
In all my tutoring, I teach maths using the Singapore Maths Method, English and Reasoning. Homework is set every week and includes Maths, English and Reasoning. Tutoring takes place weekly and I offer physical session in Sevenoaks and Orpington and online sessions. Please contact me to find out about my availability.
For Year 6 students, we focus on developing long-form comprehension responses using the PEE (Point, Evidence, Explanation) structure, creative writing, and more advanced Maths problem-solving. These sessions are designed to prepare students for independent school entrance exams such as Sevenoaks School, Caterham School and other private schools in the surrounding areas of Sevenoaks and Kent.
